When Should You See an Emergency Dentist?

What to Do in a Dental Emergency
Knocked-Out Tooth
Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. Gently rinse it with water if it’s dirty, but don’t scrub it. If you can, place it back in the socket. If not, keep it in a container of milk or saliva and call us immediately. A knocked-out tooth has the best chance of being saved if treated within about an hour.
Broken or Cracked Tooth
Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling. Save any pieces of the tooth if you can, and call us to arrange same-day care.
Severe Toothache
Rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove any trapped food. You can take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the label. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum, as it can burn the tissue. Call us to be seen as soon as possible.
Lost Filling or Crown
Keep the crown if you still have it. Avoid chewing on that side and call us to arrange a repair. A lost filling or crown usually isn’t dangerous, but treating it promptly helps prevent further damage.
Abscess or Swelling
A dental abscess is a serious infection that needs prompt attention. Rinse with a mild saltwater solution to ease discomfort and call us right away.
